CanGo Essay Example for Free
CanGo Essay Issue 1: No clear strategy for expansion CanGo has had its success, and now they are looking into the future. Their question is, ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s going to help them grow?â⬠and as Liz said, ââ¬Å"Turn them into a mighty oak.â⬠CanGo recognizes that branching out and delving into new territory will be profitable and its popular with investors since theyââ¬â¢re thinking of going for an IPO. The possibilities of adding e-books, streaming audio and video is hip but they also recognize that the online gaming industry is on the cutting edge for growth. With all of the brainstorming ideas CanGo has they do recognize thereââ¬â¢s a scarcity of resources such as capital and people. Recommendation: The management team at CanGo is full of ideas related to expanding its product line. Liz has mentioned the possibility of E-books, music and video, and Andrew suggests online gaming. Expansion is just one topic, as the company is considering offering IPO (initial public offering). The brass is contemplating major decisions without professional guidance. The employees will soon be asked to juggle more responsibilities, without the appropriate resources. CanGo should seek additional consultation specific to the objectives it wants to achieve. In addition, the company must consider the risk and where to allocate resources to be maximize profit. Furthermore, there will have to be some degree of advertising and marketing to generate interests. CanGo feels that the best way to handle new ventures is to use in-house employees. Pulling employees from jobs they are already doing will no doubt take away from quality. We recommend that Warren and Liz take into consideration the opportunity cost of expanding at this time. Will the benefits outweigh the cost of expanding. Issue 2: No capital for expansion CanGo must consider how to combine its limited resources to produce the best mix of goods and services. A cost-benefit analysis will help them measure the cost and the benefits correctly. They will need to think about two types of analysis (1) Marginal Analysis and (2) Cost-Benefit Analysis. Recommendation: Performing a marginal analysis will examine how the costs and benefits change in response to their incremental changes in actions. Any additional action that CanGo does will bring about additional cost so, type of analysis will determine if the expected benefits of their actions exceed the added cost. It was mentioned casually that the only source of capital as an IPO. This point was expounded upon by the poor sandwiches being provided. I donââ¬â¢t think Warren made the comment to be rude, but to illustrate the point that financial capitol is limited ââ¬â especially in terms of expansion. CanGo is generating interest in its industry and community. The time is ripe to offer an initial public offering. CanGo needs professional guidance in analyzing what is value and assess the possibilities of an IPO. It may consider taking advantage of its success in Japan. CanGoââ¬â¢s IPO does not have to be confined to its locality; it has to start thinking international in scope. Its popularity in Japan alone may generate the capitol necessary to expand in product, personnel, and infrastructure.

Investment Management Training :: essays research papers
Is There a Return on the Investment of Management Training? à à à à à Customer satisfaction is no doubt dependent on a great number of variables. While it may be difficult to measure the actual benefits of training in terms of customer satisfaction, it appears essential to provide some type of training for employees to improve job performance. According to Smith (2001), staffs who have received formal training have been found to be up to 230 percent more productive than untrained colleagues working in the same role. Therefore, it becomes clear that the development of an organizationââ¬â¢s human resources is a high priority for todayââ¬â¢s business leaders. à à à à à Preparation of staff should be well-planned and supportive of the companyââ¬â¢s goals. Successful companies build a consistent system with clear constraints, allowing employees some freedom accompanied with responsibility (Collins, 2001). Managers simply cannot rely on their employees coming in with all the necessary skills to be successful in their positions. Some may require more computer skills, while others need receptionist or time management skills. Individual needs should drive the training program and this is not always an easy task to accomplish. A one-size-fits-all approach to management training will most likely not be highly successful. à à à à à Larry Seldon, a Columbia University professor, stresses that ââ¬Å"different customers have different customs, different values, different psyches and different needs.â⬠(CNNMONEY, 2004) Each employeeââ¬â¢s needs may be as individual as their customersââ¬â¢ needs. When dealing with human emotions and performance, the results are not always predictable or certain. A recent University of Michigan study revealed that customer satisfaction has declined about three percent over the last five years (CNNMoney, 2004). Good managers recognize that customer service and satisfaction are key elements to be successful in the business world. Training is one of the primary ways to increase employee skills and productivity. Employees need to be well-trained in current job skills, and learn new skills on a continuing basis in order to remain competitive (Fernald & Solomon, 1998). Employers need to provide ample opportunities for employees to develop their abilities. à à à à à A new method of providing this training is through the use of the Internet. Rural communities with small businesses do not have the resources available to provide ongoing, systematic training programs for their employees. William Shuffstall, County senior extension agent, maintains that small businesses need to stay viable because their communities depend on them to keep the local economy alive (Burlingame, 2002). The effective use of technology can assist these small businesses with effective and current training strategies.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in The Things They Carried Essay
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD, is a psychological disorder that involves extreme cases of anxiety. PTSD comes as a result of an individualââ¬â¢s experience of a highly distressing event wherein there was a threat of grievous physical harm and there was experience of intense psychological stress. An individual is diagnosed with PTSD based on the American Psychiatric Associationââ¬â¢s DSM-IV & DSM-IV-TR definitions. Diagnosis of PTSD à is given if an individual shows the following symptoms for a period of more than one month. First, the individualââ¬â¢s recurrent experience of the event after the actual occurrence perhaps through dreams, recollections, and experience of anxiety upon display of different items linked with the traumatic event. Second, the individual avoids or does not feel anything when presented with things and people that are emotionally linked to the traumatic event. This may also include feelings of being estranged from other people in the individualsââ¬â¢ surroundings. Third, the individual experiences a heightened sense of arousal thus probably causing sleeplessness, sudden bursts of emotion, hyper vigilance, and the like. And lastly, the individual find himself or herself unable to properly function in certain aspects of his or her life perhaps at work, at home, or in other social environments. The severity of the PTSD, whether acute or chronic, is assessed based on how long the given symptoms persist in the individual. An event which has come to be heavily associated with PTSD is war. A great number of literary pieces have been dedicated to this event and one such work is Tim Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s The Things They Carried. PTSD in relation to war is clearly seen in the different collections of stories compiled and written by Tim Oââ¬â¢Brien in his book. One particular story found in the book that shows PTSD in the case of a war veteran is ââ¬Å"Speaking of Courageâ⬠. The main character in this particular story is Norman Bowker. Symptoms of PTSD are clearly seen in his actions. Bowker is unmotivated, experiences confusion and mental chaos, feels estranged and isolated from others in his town and is also unable to obtain work. Social inhibitions that plague this character, which are clear signs of PTSD, are exemplified in his inability to properly order in a drive-thru restaurant. Instead of speaking through the intercom, he honks his horn at the waitress until he gets his order. He then proceeds to eat his food without moving his car and leaves only upon finishing his meal. (Examples of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in The Things They Carried; Tim Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s ââ¬â The Things They Carried Eating Them Away) Bowker relives and is unable to move past the events of the war. He lives in a constant state of guilt because of his inability to prevent the death of his friend in Vietnam. The conclusion of Bowkerââ¬â¢s story is suicide, an event that is not uncommon in cases of posttraumatic stress disorder. In the story ââ¬Å"Stockingsâ⬠, the main character named Henry Dobbins wrapped his girlfriendââ¬â¢s panty hose around his neck during battle supposedly as a good luck charm. He would also sleep with it against his face. Even after the war, when Dobbins and his girlfriend were no longer a couple, he still continued to sleep with and tie the stockings around his neck. Dobbins explains this act by the referral of the continued presence of the stockingââ¬â¢s magic. This shows an aspect of PTSD stated by the American Psychiatric Association in the DSM-IV & DSM-IV-TR wherein an individual experiencing the disorder experiences reactivity to objects linked with the traumatic event. The Things They Carried was clearly written by Oââ¬â¢Brien with a theme in mind. That theme involves the experiences of war veterans after surviving the war. That is to say that the book depicts the effects of the war on the soldiers and the various individuals who were involved. Tim Oââ¬â¢Brien particularly focuses on the psychological effects that the events of the war has left. The lives of the soldiers characterized in the stories are clear examples of emotional baggage carried by survivors of the war. à à à à à à Jim Neilson states in his article The Truth in Things: Personal Trauma as Historical Amnesia in The Things They Carried, the recurring them of the horrors of war. The explicit descriptions of the incidents that the characters experienced in the story were the authorââ¬â¢s way of communicating to the audience how such events could lead to anxiety, distress, disorder, and even insanity. Andrew Morgan also acknowledges that in reality, war veterans who experienced the Vietnam War still live with the guilt and fears induced by that experience. They carry these memories with them and are unable to lead the same lives they used to have before joining the war. These are what caused them to eventual experience of PTSD, to eventual insanity, and for some even to suicide. à Posttraumatic stress disorder is indeed a problem that plagues many war veterans today. It is encompassing in its scope and affects all aspects of the lives of those experiencing it. Tim Oââ¬â¢Brien paints for us, in The Things They Carried, a clear picture of what PTSD is, what instances can lead to it, and the ugliness that it brings in its wake. It was discovered that employees that are parents would highly value workplace flexibility as it can allow the employee to fulfil certain parental needs required of them to their family. The needs of a family is to provide economic support, the need to provide practical care to their children such as picking them up from school, and the need of emotional care to their children such as providing attention, stimulation and love to the child and this is provided to the employee through a working environment that is not mentally and physically draining. It is evidenced that employees who do not have the required needs of a parent still value workplace flexibility as it allows for the employee to potentially have time to alleviate the stress associated with the long work hours. It was discovered that the strategy employed by Probuild could not possibly work for organisations that do not have long hours as a contributor to family-work conflict. For example a young parent working in a fast paced restaurant, for a five hour shift for three days a week will not suffer from the consequences of long hours, yet may suffer from the consequences of a high-stress environment leading to exhaustion and not having the energy to tend to their childà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s needs. It has been discovered that flexible companies are more competitive because a link between competitiveness and competitive advantage is evident. The link is that efficiency is one of the generic building blocks of competitive advantage and efficiency is created by employee productivity. Employee productivity is influenc ed by employee engagement which means higher chances of meeting organisational goals resulting from the positive employee satisfaction. Higher employee engagement also means higher profits as an employee that is shown to be engaged will not show signs of the the three burnout dimensions of exhaustion, cynicism, and inefÃâà ¬Ãâà cacy. Time related flexibility policies such as reduced time, a strategy that allows full-time employees to opt for a part-time workload whilst maintaining their position at Probuild Dealing with the reduction of working Saturdays. It has been recommended to Probuild that they implement the strategy of reduced time, as would prove to be mutually beneficial to both employees as the parent would be able to fulfil parental duties, whilst the part-time employee would receive more income due to more hours worked. It has also been Recommended that Probuild establish and maintain a culture of flexibility as the employee will experience a lower level o f stress resulting from work-life/family conflicts and a culture of flexibility has been shown to increase the engagement levels of employees, which has been linked with the efficiency of a company, thus increasing its competitiveness within the industry. Our writers will create an original "Pro Build Case Study Report" essay for you Create order 1.0 Introduction The Probuild construction companyà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s decision to investigate the work-family balance within their company allowing the development of a work-life balance policy is a good step towards increasing the level of satisfaction of their employees. Numerous studies have shown that the benefits of increased employee satisfaction within a company leads to a higher customer satisfaction, loyalty, profitability, productivity and safety (Harter, J. K., Schmidt, F. L., Hayes, T. L, 2002). An issue with this case is that of work-life balance and its effects on the satisfaction and engagement levels of their employees. As it was revealed by a survey distributed to employees and their partners, it was discovered that although employees are happy to work at Probuild, the long hours and workload is having an adverse effect on their family life. A key issue relating to this case can be identified as family-to-work conÃâà ¬Ã ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
¡ict, and as studies have shown that decre ases in employee satisfaction can lead to employee burnout and a heightened percentage of negative employee turnover. 2.0 Why do Employees value opportunities for workplace flexibility? As it was revealed by a survey distributed to employees and their partners, it was discovered that although employees are happy to work at Probuild, the long hours and workload is having an adverse effect on their family life. A key issue relating to this case can be identified as family-to-work conÃâà ¬Ã ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã
¡ict which is defined as in-compatibilities that arise between the two major focal points of adult life, work and family resulting in adverse effects on employee satisfaction in the forms of heightened stress, lower levels of motivation and frustration (Netemeyer, R. G., Boles, J. S., McMurrian, R, 1996). Employees that are parents would highly value workplace flexibility as it can allow the employee to fulfil certain parental needs required of them to their family. As they are presented with variable work hours it can have the potential to reduce family-to-work conflict through pertaining to the needs of the employeeà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s family. These parental n eeds as defined by Holt and Thaulow are the needs required of the workplace to the parent (employee) which includes the requirement to provide economic support, or simply the need to receive an income to support their family (Holt, H., Thaulow, I, 1996). The need to provide practical care to their children such as picking them up from school, taking sick children to the doctors or dental visits and so forth can potentially be provided through workplace flexibility (Holt, H., Thaulow, I, 1996). The last need is that of emotional care to their children such as providing attention, stimulation and love to the child which is highly important during the early years of a childà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s development, and this is provided to the employee through a working environment that is not mentally and physically draining (Holt, H., Thaulow, I, 1996). It is evidenced that employees who do not have the required needs of a parent still value workplace flexibility as it allows for the empl oyee to potentially have time to alleviate the stress associated with the long work hours. It has been identified that there is a link between people who are over committed to their work and a general feeling that their lives outside of work are unsatisfactory leading to mental conditions such as depression (Iacovides, A., Fountoulakis, K. N., Kaprinis, S., Kaprinis, G.,2003) However employees of Probuild such as managers may not value workplace flexibility. Due to a large number of employees applying for numerous different work hour flexibilities, it becomes increasingly difficult for them to put into practice. 3.0 Would this Strategy Work in all Organisations and Industries? The strategy employed by Probuild was performed through a survey handed out to employees within the organisation allowing for a strategy to be developed that is highly tailored to suit the unique needs of their own employees. Unless there is an organisation that is an exact replica of Probuild, with exactly the same long hour issue, the resulting strategies would differ due to the unique needs of the other organisation. The methods used by Probuild to receive the end result strategies may work for an organisation that has the similar work shift structures, such as a regular nine to five job with a similar amount of employees currently working. This strategy would work for those businesses that have a similar amount of employees because there would potentially be enough employees to cover the work-time that other employees have requested off. This strategy could not possibly work for organisations that do not have long hours as a contributor to family-work conflict. There are man y other factors contributing to family-work conflict that are simply not present in other forms of work. 4.0 Is it Possible for Companies to be Competitive as well as Flexible? The possibility of work place flexibility and competitiveness are highly likely, but first it is necessary to define what it means to be competitive. Competitiveness is defined as the fundamental underpinning of prosperity, in which prosperity is achieved through high levels of employee productivity and efficiency (Porter, M. E., Ketels, C., Delgado, M, 2007). The link between competitiveness and competitive advantage is that efficiency is one of the generic building blocks of competitive advantage and efficiency is created by employee productivity. Employee productivity as defined by Charles Hill and Gareth Jones is the output produced per employee, for example if it takes company à ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"Aà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ three hours for an employee to produce a laptop, compared to Company à ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"Bà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ which takes 2 hours for an employee to produce a laptop, it can be said that company à ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"Bà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ has a higher level of employee productivit y as more laptops are able to be produced leading to a higher level of competitive advantage (Hill, Jones, C.H, G.J, 2010). A study completed by A Better Balance, a family-work balance legal centre shows that a higher level of employee satisfaction is reached when employees have workplace flexibility as they feel they have more of a stake in the organisation and it has been shown that it is 50% more likely that employees with workplace flexibility are more engaged within their work (A Better Balance, 2010). Employee engagement as defined by Maslach et al. (2001), the employee engagement is regarded as the energy, involvement, and efÃâà ¬Ãâà cacy of the employee (Maslach, C., Schaufelli, W.B. and Leiter, M.P, 2001). Higher employee engagement means higher chances of meeting organisational goals resulting from the positive employee satisfaction. Higher employee engagement also means higher profits as an employee that is shown to be engaged will not show signs of the thr ee burnout dimensions of exhaustion, cynicism, and inefÃâà ¬Ãâà cacy (Maslach, C., Schaufelli, W.B. and Leiter, M.P, 2001). Therefore, through the increase of customer satisfaction from workplace flexibility, heightened employee engagement is the result. The company that has a higher employee engagement will have a higher level of employee productivity and thus a higher level of efficiency. A higher level of efficiency means a competitive advantage over a company that does not use flexible workplace practices, in which such an inflexible workplace would suffer the consequences of exhaustion, cynicism and inefficacy. 5.0 What Other Flexibility and Work/ Family Balance Strategies could Probuild utilized? To minimise the stress cause by work-family conflicts, Probuild could have implemented a number of other strategies. As the reason for these conflicts was caused by the lengthy hours that ProBuildà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s employees are required to work, resulting in their partners having to perform all of the house-hold maintenance whilst engaging in paid work themselves, strategies that target the lengthy work hours are required. Time related flexibility policies identified by the Families and Work Institute and the Society for Human Resource Management include reduced time, a strategy that allows full-time employees to opt for a part-time workload whilst maintaining their position at Probuild (F W I, SHRM, 2012). Dealing with overwork is another strategy identified by the Families and Work Institute and the Society for Human Resource Management which is the process of reducing the amount of unnecessary work, or in ProBuilds case, the reduction of working Saturdays (F W I, SHRM, 20 12). 6.0 What do you believe the Productivity Outcomes and Benefits of Such a Program Would be to Probuild? The levels in employee productivity in Probuild, if such programs were implemented, would certainly be increased. As evidence has shown that employee satisfaction is increased when the employee is able to utilize workplace flexibility policies as the stress and negative behaviours relating from work-life or work-family conflicts is reduced. If such a strategy such as reduced time was implemented, full-time employees of Probuild would be able to swap their work load with another worker, allowing them to pick up their children, or fulfil other outside of work duties, reducing the amount of work-life/family conflicts. The benefits of increased employee satisfaction has been identified as increases in the level of employee engagement. Employee engagement is highly important to the competitiveness of a company as is it a result of increasing employee productivity by reducing adverse effects such as exhaustion, cynicism and inefficacy, also known as burnout. 6.0Conclusions The issues relating to the Probuild case was that of work-life/family balances and trying to implement efficient strategies to deal with the conflicts than can arise between these two major focal point of adult life. Employees value these workplace flexibility policies because it allows them to fulfil their outside of work needs. Whether the employee is a parent that requires flexible work hours to pick up their children, or whether the employee is a young student requiring time off to study for exams, the benefits to the employee and Probuild are mutual. The benefits that Probuild receives from implementing flexible work policies is that in the form of employee engagement which has been shown to arise from employees satisfaction of their work place. Achieving high employee engagement at Probuild should be a high priority as it can increase the level of employee productivity, increasing efficiency, which is a building block for creating competitive advantage. Therefore, it has b een discovered that the company that practices flexible work policies will prove to have a higher level of competitiveness than that of a company that is inflexible. 7.0Recommendations For Probuild to maximise competitive advantage it is suggested that: 1. Probuild implement the strategy of reduced time, as this would allow full-time parents to swap a certain amount of their workload to another part-time employee, whilst maintaining their current position at Probuild. This would prove to be mutually beneficial to both employees as the parent would be able to fulfil parental duties, whilst the part-time employee would receive more income due to more hours worked. This would solve the issue with employees whose partners are distressed by the Saturday shifts by giving this shift to an employee who doesnà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢t have a young family. 2. Probuild establish and maintain a culture of flexibility. This culture of flexibility is mutually beneficial to the employee and Probuild as the employee will experience a lower level of stress resulting from work-life/family conflicts. This would be beneficial to Probuild because a culture of flexibility I shown to in crease the engagement levels of employees, which has been linked with the efficiency of a company, thus increasing its competitiveness within the industry. Free Catcher in the Ryes Holdens Phony Pho Essay Example For Students
Free Catcher in the Ryes: Holdens Phony Pho Essay bia Catcher Rye EssaysHoldens Phony Phobia in The Catcher in the Rye What does phony mean to you? Do you consider it something that is not what it really seems? Or even something or someone that isnt normal in all ways or just in some? Phony is one of the words in the English literature that can have numerous interpretations. Can be being phony possibly hinder an attempt to accomplish a task to fully function mentally? Can phony delay an individuals maturing period? In J.D. Salingers Catcher in the Rye, Holdens phony phobia restricts him from becoming a fully matured adult. In Holdens attempted journey in becoming a fully matured adult, he encounters many scenarios involving friendships, personal opinions, and his love of children. His journey is an unpleasant and difficult one with many lessons learned along the way. Holden possesses abnormal relationships with some of the characters in Catcher in the Rye. Many of his friends and those he talks highly about are young children. He does not make any negative comments about these companions, and there is no mention whatsoever of phony. Holden has a strong relationship with Phoebee, his younger sister. Holden vocalizes about the fact Phoebee can visit him anytime in the summer, What Id do, Id let old Phoebee came out and visit me in the summertime and on Christmas vacation and Easter vacation (205). Holden shows a solid liking to his sister and is always wanting her by his side. He finds a hard time associating with older, mature individuals. Also, a strong relationship with Allie his deceased younger brother, is apparent due to the twenty references in the novel. In fact, most of Holdens fondest memories are of those times with his younger siblings. His comments of innocence help establish this connection. Someone who is trying to learn the stages of developing into a mature adult would not develop as soon, or as fully when spending their time solely with those who are five to seven years of age. They would not experience the guidance from older adults to correct wrong behavior. The guidance of an elder isnt present and they need to learn by themselves. Harrison Smith has defined Holdens friendships quite clearly What was wrong with Holden was his moral revulsion against anything that was ugly, evil, cruel, or what he called phony and his acute responsiveness to beauty and innocence, especially the innocence of the very young. (Smith 1). Holden sees the world as a evil, cruel place where everyone is out to get him. He reacts to the people of the world as the ones creating these feelings of grief for him so he distances himself from these characters. As he shuts himself away from these people he suffers from loneliness. He sadly continually paralyses his cooperation with real friends. His school experiences also tie into his friendships with others . Especially his infamous roommate Stradlater, and a loser of a next door neighbor Ackley. Holdens phony addiction gets him into trouble with Stradlater, only leading to his down fall. that is to the dorm floor when he loses the fist fight match against Stradlater. Holden looks for the flaw in everyone and tries to eliminate that person that he sees as a threat. So, Holden decides to face off against the phony Stradlater to take out revenge for Stradlater apparently giving Jane Gallagher an old next door neighbor when Holden was a child the time of her life in the back of Ed Banks car. Holden also thinks every teacher is a phony who pretends to be helpful to students. .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf , .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf .postImageUrl , .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf , .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf:hover , .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf:visited , .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf:active { border:0!important; } .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf:active , .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8f061d38aa1369815d8ed85941a20ebf:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Bruschette with chocolate milk shake Essay Sadly If Holden has trouble in school he does not seek help from peers because he believes that they are phony, and we must remember, he does not associate with these types of individuals. Hence this point is tied into one of the reasons he is being kicked out of Pencey, failing 4 out of 5 courses. T. Morris puts it best by saying Holden Caulfield is so super-sensitive to others faults that he has no friends, among boys at least (Morris 1). His avoidance of things phony is very strong, yet he lies to the mother of a schoolmate. Holden feels that the schoolmate is nothing great and still says that her son is a great kid! Throughout the whole novel Holden explains how if he were in a movie or when he becomes an adult how unphony he would be. The funny thing is Holden at one point is holding his stomach like he has been shot in a movie, when he has just talked about how phony actors are. A typical phony quote from Holden If anybody tries to do anything phony, they couldnt stay (205). He is making reference to when he has his own house in a secluded dream home and how people cant do phony things there. This phony idea is causing his mind to think like a child and making him impossible to work with; its like saying you can come for a walk with me but if you dont buy me candy you cant stay with me! Holden has a one track mind. Its either his way or the highway. This is another example of how Holdens phony problem hinders his chance at full maturity. The thought of phony is constantly on Holdens mind. On average there are about forty references towards phony. Holden is so scared of becoming what he considers wrong a phony that he does not to even want to experience new events, encounters, or new people. Holden comments, if he could star in a movie short how phony he would seem. Thus he would turn down the offer if it arose Id be a phony if I let them stick me in a movie short (72). Holden does not like to open himself to others and shies away from interaction. Holdens actions toward Mr. Spencers his history teacher- speech is that he feels Mr. Spencer is a phony, someone of no importance. The advice that is given to him by Spencer is considered to be phony and so he tunes out. Old Spencer as Holden refers to him was asking why Holden flunked from Elkton Hills, so Holden explains his experiences at the school. Only problem is after Holden gives his answer his mind goes off track, I didnt like going into the whole thing with him. He wouldnt have understood it anywayOne of the big reasons I left Elkton Hills was because I was surrounded by phonies. ..For instance, the headmaster, Mr. Haas, that was the phoniest bastard I ever met in my life! (13-14). Holden is a prisoner of his own mind, he wanders aimlessly through his thoughts and blocks out all distractions. He continues to brush off advice given to him throughout the novel, and most likely through his whole life. Then, of course, if his future boss of a unphony company that Holden works for wanted to encourage better work habits on him, Holden would not listen, and the boss would have to let Holden go. If any future unphony friends wanted to help him with his life problems would go unheard by Holden, and they will no longer want to even be near him. If his unphony wife tries to talk about their marriage in which she will at one time or another! she will be understandable upset by the fact that he does not listen. Holden always has an excuse for every action he produces and stands by it strongly. He will and I quote, will become impossible to work with, be friends with, and even in a marriage. As you see, just by simply not listening and blocking out phony advice Holden will cause himself a life time of trouble. .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58 , .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58 .postImageUrl , .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58 , .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58:hover , .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58:visited , .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58:active { border:0!important; } .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58:active , .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58 .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2f22c56d0a74500d3ca78211de30ca58:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Expository Writing Essay Holden has a long way to go before he can be rightfully called a fully matured adult. His reactions to experiences, due to his phony phobia, cause him to be lonely and to get himself into trouble. The whole novel is so congested with these phony related incidences that his life is non stop trouble. Holden is not going to fully mature in the same time period as his peers. Unfortunately Holden will continue to lag behind because of his character, which he cannot change.
